Alternative Diet

We first started to really pay attention to Ekko's diet when he at four months' age started to continuously be sick to his stomach. Despite several visits to the vet, we couldn't find the reason for his sickness, and in about a month he was getting into a really bad condition. Since trying several dog food brands didn't help, we tried out all kinds of "porridges" in all kinds of forms: raw, cooked, with rice and with smashed potatoes, but although these diets worked better than processed dog food, they still couldn't make him better for longer than a little while.

As I got familiar with these home-made porridges, I also learned about BARF, biologically appropriate raw food, where the idea is to feed dogs only with different kinds of raw meat and bones, offal and veggie pure. In the beginning I was appalled by the idea of feeding my dog raw chicken or pork, but litte by little I got over my attitude problem and we gradually moved to barf.

For us, the best thing about barf is - in addition to how well Ekko is now - the fact that Ekko just loves this diet! He used to be even picky, but these days he has a really good appetite and he seems to enjoy the variance of his meals. We recommend for everyone to try it! If you're interested, there are some links to barf sites on the Links page.

When eating bones, Ekko finds it very important not to get his paws dirty! =)
